As per the rumors, Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema might join forces to create India’s biggest streaming platform. This means your favourite movies, TV shows, and sports matches could all be in one place in JioCinema. What this means is more content in one place you can imagine having Disney’s Hollywood, Bollywood, and live sports all on one app in the JioCinema. If this happens instead of switching between apps, you can enjoy everything in one place that will make you happy and this will make a stronger competition if this merger happens and this may shake up the streaming world in India and bring even better options for you.

This rumor, though not confirmed, has big implications. Disney+ Hotstar, owned by Walt Disney’s Star India, is already one of India’s top streaming services with over 500 million downloads on Google Play Store. On the other hand, JioCinema, owned by Viacom18 (controlled by Reliance Industries), has over 100 million downloads. While there’s a significant gap, Reliance believes running two separate platforms is costly and less efficient. By merging them, Reliance could build a more powerful service that could compete with big names like YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video.
This potential merger comes after Reliance and Disney signed deals to merge Star India and Viacom18 earlier this year, forming a media giant valued at about $8.5 billion. Together, they would have over 100 TV channels and two streaming services, but Reliance seems keen on consolidating into one platform.
The merger still needs regulatory approval from bodies like the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Reliance is also willing to shut down some TV channels in Hindi and regional markets to prevent becoming too dominant.
JioCinema has been growing fast, particularly after securing digital rights to the Indian Premier League (IPL), drawing record-breaking viewership. If combined with Disney+ Hotstar, the new platform could become India’s largest streaming service, boasting over 125,000 hours of entertainment, sports, and Hollywood content. It could include sports rights like the IPL and content from studios such as Disney, HBO, and Paramount Global.
Reliance has made similar moves before, like merging Voot into JioCinema. Given their track record, this merger could truly transform India’s streaming landscape.
So, what do you think of this rumor? Do you believe it will happen? And how do you feel about the possibility of such a massive streaming platform?
